Sub-Blogs

Appliance Notes is a blog where I file all the new and interesting kitchen appliances I see in the course of my work. I also include articles on choosing appliances here.
Kitschy Kitchens is a blog where I critique the worst of the worst in kitchens. Poor design, an assault on the eyes, wrong colors, wrong materials; they all can be found there. Take an amusing detour to discover what you DON'T want in a kitchen.

Stop Using Plastics and Save the Earth!

Today in the San Francisco Chronicle Mark Morford, the irreverent columnist, opened my eyes about where all the plastic is going, after it leaves my kitchen and home, in his column entitled Come see our giant toxic stew!

Horrified, I followed Mark's links to the LA Times site called Altered Oceans

If you dare to look, be sure to do Part 4, on Seaborn Plastic Debris.

Then tell me what you're going to use next time you have a choice.

  1. Plastic bottled water is not only bad for our environment, it's also bad for our health. Most containers of bottled water sit out in the sun for extended periods of time for storage purposes before reaching the shelves of our local markets. Tests in Europe have proven time and time again that the sun's rays break down the plastic and release the toxins into the bottled water. Very small amounts but toxins all the same. Here in Italy we use plastic and glass bottled water. Obviously the glass is more expensive, but you can have litre bottles delivered to your door. They come in carrying cases of six or 12 bottles like wine. You leave the empty bottles outside your door and then they replace them with fresh bottles weekly or whenever you call. Its a wonderful system...Better for my health and for the environment as the glass can be recycled.

  2. I don't know what tap water is like in Europe, but here in the San Francisco Bay Area of California we have the best tap water there is.

Likely far better than most bottled waters that actually comes from taps elsewhere.

Yet people still consume massive amounts of bottled water here. And it isn't bottled in glass either.

You are absolutely right MAds. There were massive stacks of cases of bottled water sitting in the sun in front of Safeway last time I was there.

  3. I'm from the Bay area (Go Bears!)and I remember always drinking the tap water with no probs. My father lives out in Vallejo and his tap water is undrinkable...I guess the point is that if you are going to drink bottled water go for the glass bottles.
